Heartwarming and, in its own way, original. 7/10.
Watching this again after a long time, and having more series to compare it to than then, I’ll elaborate on that short comment.
“In its own way, original” is a pleonasm. It’s saying the same thing twice. Anyway, although I can’t quite name what exactly makes this series original, I still feel it is. I like the narrative style, besides other things. I can’t rememeber having seen any other anime that uses it (in the way “The Third” does, at least).
I forgot to mention that the heroine kicks some serious ass. Especially the finale is impressive in those regards. Well, I’m a sucker for capable women, so your mileage may vary. But this is somewhat a characteristic of “The Third”. This anime avoids the pitfalls of a hero with disproportionately large powers, that is having to field ever more powerful villains and ever more desperate situations, by simply cutting quite unceremoniously through that gordian knot: the heroine (Honoka) wins, period. The series focus much more on the philosophical aspect(s) than on the challenges the protagonist faces. I find that agreeable.
I thought the ending was a bit rushed — although this falls in line with the “cutting through the knot” spirit of these series. The all-important final battle takes about sixty (stunning) seconds, and the finale itself only two episodes, whereas the previous chapter spanned six!
But if you’re like me and have been frustrated and irritated by endlessly strung out fights like in Dragon Ball or Bleach, for instance, this “cut the bullshit” is refreshing in itself. Maybe that’s why it feels original.
On second thought, this anime feels better than a seven, even if the ending had too many hallmarks of a “meeting with the father” for me to really condone it. So make that a revisited 8/10.
By the way, the voice actress for Honoka, Toyoguchi Megumi, is the same as the one for Black Lagoon’s Rebecca (Rebby).
