This is the first proper Anime I ever watched, and I love it. I have the collecters DVD set and have watched it about a million times, so based on that feel i can give a very informed opinion of the show :P.
Okay, the general outline of the show is that Tenchi Masaki, an only child living with his father as his mother past away some years ago, goes during the summer to work with his grandfather at the family shrine in the country, there he enters the forbidden cave and awakens an ancient demon know as “Ryoko”, after awakening this demon, it attracts several different people to come to earth for various reason, all of them beautiful women!! I wont go into more detail about the plot, but lets just say with this you have a recipe for a great romance/comedy thats both very easy to watch and funny.
PLOT: The plot in Tenchi Muyo, if anything, is the thing that would put people off Tenchi Muyo, it can be a little confusing when it goes into more detail about the whole theology behind the story, but to be perfectly honest with you i have watched it many many times and really don’t understand it that well but still love watching it, as really the who theology behind the story inst that important when it comes to enjoying this show.
ANIMATION: It is an old anime, but the anime is a very high quality for the time and is quite easy on the eye even though it does look a little dated.
CHARACTERS: There is a good range of characters in this anime, Tenchi’s father and grandfather are both funny in their own ways and provide some good humour when the focus is not on Tenchi and the girls. When it comes to the female characters which is the main premise of this anime as it is a harem, i have found that most people find a particular favourite who they want Tenchi to get with, and find some of the other female characters anouying. Although the OVA isn’t very long only about 12 episodes there is some good character development.
VOICES: When it comes to reviewing this however, i have only ever watched this show with the dubbing, one of the only animes I have done so with as I find sub titles better, but the Dubbing on this is not great as some of the voices especially that of some of the female characters, Ayeka for example is intensely annoying as she sounds about 100 years old… but besides that it is perfectly watchable with the dub on.
MUSIC: The entrance music is great for the first part of the OVA series, the music within the show is ok, but there isnt anything really special in here but nothing that will annoy you.
OVERALL: This anime is a personal favourite of mine as it is the first one i ever watched, it is very easy to watch and is a lot of fun. There are some problems with it, that being the somewhat complicated theology behind the show, and if you watch it with the dub voices on. The main problem that many people have with the show is that there are a lot of unanswered questions. However besides all of this it should not stop you watching this anime, its great fun, funny and there are no filler episodes, some may say that there may be one or two, but these i feel are used to help advance the relationships between the characters and develop them more. The series never feels like its dragging and i never get tired of watching it. Highly recommended!!!
