Ranma 1/2 Review

Ranma 1/2 is about a boy who is a martial artist who changes to a girl with the splash of water. Added to this is that the boy’s father who turns into a panda, a rival who turns into a pig, an amazon warrior who turns into a cat and tries to kill the girl version of Ranma but tries to marry the boy version of Ranma, and Ranma’s violence-prone fiance. It leads to a full of gags, touchy, funny and gently romantic comedy called Ranma 1/2.
The story develops very slowly, and the romantic development is even slower. However the gags of this anime are fast and furious, and the action of this anime is as ridiculous as it can be. Seeing the slow development of Akane - Ranma’s fiance and Ranma, himself is in the long run, a very sweet and rewarding story as they learn to appreciate each other slowly while seeing little hints of their true feelings for each other.
No one does it better than Rumiko Takahashi when it comes to showing the delicate factors that lies in romance. Also gags of Ranma turning into a girl in the wrong places at the wrong time, or right places at the right time is a gag that never gets old.
This anime is full of the usual Japanese gags such as explosions and people flying away with a punch and many, many visually sexual jokes, but they never seem to get old.
Compared to the manga, even with 7 seasons, the anime seem to be so much shorter. The manga consists of 32 volumes while the anime lasts only up to manga volume 22 or so. However seeing all the lovably Ranma character moving like life itself is worthy of the price, as you get to see the gags in action to make it more entertaining than manga at times.
Season 1 of Ranma 1/2 is slow. Unlike the rest of seasons, it starts with somewhat of melodramtic tone, as you get to see Akane going through some personal emotions that aren’t quite solved, however that blows over in a few episodes and Ranma 1/2 starts to take on the flow which the rest of the seasons of episodes will be in. Non-stop gags and large amount of fights between the lovable couple.
If you like Romantic comedy, this is a must-have for you. If you don’t like Romantic comedy, this is still a must-have for you as you will be drawn into the genre if you aren’t already in it. It is just that good once you get past the melodramatic episodes.
