Plot Summary: Macross Frontier marks the 25th anniversary of the Macross anime franchise. It is a direct sequel to the first Macross series and Macross 7 and follows the lives of Alto Saotome, Ranka Lee and a pop idol named Sheryl Nome on board the Macross Frontier colonization fleet. After the war against the Zentradi aliens, Humankind has spread across the universe in order to ensure its survival. The Macross Frontier fleet is part of a effort to spread and maintain the culture of humanity.

Awesome series. Loved the action, romance and the songs. I just didn’t like the ending because I wanted to know who won; Sheyrl or Ranka. Totally recommended.
btw: Don’t let the main character bother you too much.
Great anime but the main chararcter is a bit anoying loved everything exept the ending. I really hoped that Alto would get to get together with Sheryl that would be awesome i mean its not a hard choice beetwen Sheryl and Ranka…
This is a great triangle love story. I watched the original Macross movie (the one with Minmei)when I was still in school and thought that you can’t beat that love triangle story and the great song. But the Macross Frontier, imo, beats the original. The Macross Frontier’s triangle love story builts right from the first episode: about how Alto meets Sheryl and Ranka. Sheryl is a mature, confident and established woman and celebrity while Ranka is innocent insecure girl. Every episode develops the relationship between Alto/Sheryl/Ranka a bit more. Alto is a character with personal issue. Some people might nto like him too much. But it’s exactly because he’s so dense that it’s addictive to see how Sheryl and Ranka try to show him their love. It’s almost as if to purposely contrast how a woman and a girl would feel and act to get a guy. All this while Sheryl deals with the declines of her fame in the face of Ranka’s rise and vice versa. Interweaved with this main triangle love story are minor love arc, such as Michel/Klan and Ozma/Cathy, that complements the main story. The songs in this anime are also awesome.
My favorite episodes are ep10 where both Sheryl and Ranka kiss Alta in their own ways. The pause after Sheryl kiss Alta to see his reaction and only to pretend to be nonchalant after seeing his dense reaction; how Ranka kisses Alta in the movie set but it’s real. The episode is superb. Episode 15 when both Sheryl and Ranka compete to get Alto’s attention by thanking him and singing together. And my absolute favorite is episode 24 when before the big battle when Alto came to see Sheryl and tell her how he feels, Sheryl fakes, then kisses Alta, and tell him to save Ranka. I had to watch ep 25 and then again to understand it. She knew that she’s going to die, and knowing that Alto has feeling for Ranka but wants to kill her, tells him to save Ranka instead. She wouldn’t let him say the words until after he comes back and giving him her earring as a keepsake. I thought it was just that, but then in ep25, I didn’t get at first when Sheryl was down on stage after the attack (presumably close to death due to V-type disease) and said to Ranka that her role is finish and have nothing left. Then I realize her original intention in ep24, which was to let Alto and Ranka be together, since she knew going to die. Giving him the earring was to let him remember her by. Of course, she is also saved by Ranka in ep25.
My only complaint is that the last episode (25) seems to be a bit rushed in ending everything compared to how the story is developed. Needless to say, I would have loved to see Alto choose Sheryl instead of this stupid vague ending. I think the producer of this anime did this on purpose to get you hooked, and also it leaves the possibility of putting Alto’s choice in the supposedly upcoming Macross Frontier movie.

First off to teh grim reaper in response to your question no you dont have to watch the other macross to understand this one, ok now all this seriese is Epic Win, Bravo! i definantley liked this anime storyline, plot animation, music, characters all Great alot of emotions throughout the seriese id recommend this to anyone who has the time to watch it 5/5

I loved this anime! But I am a RankaxAlto fan. I find Sheryl clingy and annoying. I love the triangle though, it helpt build their relationships all for the better in the end. I like Ranka over Sheryl because Ranka is the reason for why Alto joined SMS in ther first place. She’s his ground, his center. I wish there had been a conclusive end to the triangle in the end, now I’m only left to my own imagination

Ranka was kinda a weak woman in the first place, Sheryl actually had some independence. Personally, I favor Sheryl as a character over Alto AND Ranka. Ranka is too weak-willed for most of the series, too girly and cutesy, in the way where she’s meant to be that silly little ditsy archetype. She’s a lot better than just an archetype, but still…not quite my cup of tea. Sheryl’s bychiness is explainable, and honestly, she doesnt go in that mode very often, and when she does, it was usually made in jest, and in a very loving way. Alto, I have no problem with him looking like a girl, but I dislike how obstinate and how much of a righteous asshole he is. Honestly, he just seems like ur typical rebellious teenager, and throughout the series gives little reason to defy that perception of him. As for the violence, the action got very repetitive. It was mindblowing at the beginning, but I noticed they started using the same scenes over and over again, tho that can be excused, since CGI like this is expensive, tho if that was the case they shudda just cut down on unnecessary action. As for the end, it seemed a little rushed, and a lot of the drama was milked pretty heavily. Overall, I thought it was a good series tho, definitely one worth watching. I like how open ended it was, too many times series try to cater to one audience or the other, rather than letting them think for themselves. I appreciated that neither Sheryl or Ranka hooked up with him, and that they simply agreed to continue pursuing him. I just watched the movie too, which, imo, actually streamlines the story and has a better plot overall, but since it’s only a 2 hour movie, some of the parts are rushed, and that kills it a little for me, but it’s still damn good, and, like the series, well worth watching
this anime is good…it can make you fell thesame way as the character feels…watch it Im sure you’ll enjoy it…Im hoping also for a second season….^_^
