Love Hina Review
Sep 14th, 2007 by lordgoth
For all you ‘macho’ anime watching male freaks of nature out there, if there is one ‘girly’ anime that you must watch in your life- this is IT.
I recently watched Ah! My Goddess (1993 OVAs) and realised how much Love Hina had actually ripped off from it in terms of overall plot and even characters. This however, does not tarnish the excellence that is Love Hina because i would still prefer Love Hina if i were to compare the 2; reason being that Love Hina is a more down-to-earth and ‘human’ story. Something we all have a possibility of experiencing. No Goddesses and other-worldly beings…
STORY: The story is a not too complicated love story; about the promise a young boy had made to a girl whose identity now eludes him. He is made, quite unwillingly at first, to stay at Hinata Inn (hence Love ‘Hina’) which is actually a hostel/ boarding house for females.
The boy, Keitaro, is quite the blundering idiot that we all are at one point or other in our lives and gets into all sorts of misunderstandings, mishaps and generally humourous situations with the other girls, especially Naru Narusegawa, in the boarding house.
The plot is excellent and the dialogue extremely humourous. Score- 8.5/10
PACE: While Love Hina does not have the devilish pace that is Initial D: Stage 1, it is good enough to keep me coming back for more episode after episode. A sure sign of a good anime- when you can’t get enough and just want to know more. Score- 9/10
ANIMATION: The animation is excellent with beautifully painted backgrounds, fluid motions and the sexiest anime girls i have even seen (as of today). No anime has yet topped Love Hina in terms of the characters’ sexiness, not even the new Ah! My Goddess series. Oh, and yeah, i love the ‘Naru punch’! Ha! Score- 8.5/10
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: The characters are very well developed. After watching the series, you would know a little about each character’s background, history, thoughts, desires, aspirations and goals. This is a well balanced series where each character is given his/ her moment to shine, much like in X and Bleach. Score- 9/10
MUSIC: The music is excellent. It sets the mood for each particular scene and is so seemlessly woven into the entire fabric of the anime that you wouldn’t at first notice it. i only realised how good the music was when i found myself inadvertently humming the tunes of certain songs when out with friends.
Today, almost 2 years after watching Love Hina, its soundtrack is still on my playlists at least once or twice weekly. The Love Hina soundtrack is definitely up there with the likes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, Spirited Away, Transformers: The Movie, Initial D and Bleach. Score- 9.5/10
My overall score is obtained from adding the scores from the 5 sections, converting that to a 100%, then divided by 10 to get a score out of 10. Fractions are rounded up.
OVERALL SCORE: 9/10

this is not a girly anime.
