Ergo Proxy Review

Ergo Proxy is an amazingly original and surprising anime. It’s a small wonder this anime scored so high on the best anime of 2006 survey. Ergo Proxy takes place in an apocalyptic future. However the real stories is behind the politics of the time. Why is there a conspiracy? What is the government trying to hide? What is a “Proxy”? Why are the robots becoming infected with this “Cogito” virus. Along the way many references to various mythologies give clues and insight to the background of the story. Greek and Aztec mythology is particularly prominent so if you’re familiar with either you’ll gain a few more clues. Latin also plays a role in revealing aspects of the plot.
Backing the intriguing and compelling story is a series of great visuals. The artistry put into every scene is something the studio can be proud of. Rather than give the viewer flashy, bright images, most aspects of Ergo Proxy are dark and drab, utilizing browns, greys, and blacks. When vivid colour is used, it creates a stark contrast to the usual repertoire of the series. Ergo Proxy has a look and feel all it’s own. Don’t expect a lot of action either. Ergo Proxy’s visuals are generally slow, allowing the viewer to absorb the image. But when the action does take centre stage, you won’t be disappointed by their impact.
The characters in Ergo Proxy are all quite exceptional showing depth and personality. As the anime progresses, more of each individual’s psyche is revealed. Even as more layers and complexity are weaved into each individual, they retain their original identities and feel very realistic. Even drastic changes in characters are believable given the unique circumstances surrounding each individual. Overall the characters are very convincing and realistic as people and appear more than mere characters in a show. They almost appear alive. This goes double for the artificial life forms found in the series. Even though they might be machines, they have personalities (albeit typically mechanical personalities). However, the “Cogito” virus allows these machines to develop a “heart” and let their personalities change and evolve.
The opening is very well done. I typically skip an anime’s opening after viewing it once but for this particular series I found myself sitting through the entire opening again and again. It’s just that good. The opening combines great artistic visuals with drab colors and an awesome score to really give a great feeling of the anime. Additional effects such as crossfading, overlaying, distortion and blur keep your eyes entertained through the entire sequence. One thing of note is that the opening does not appear until the 3rd episode of the series, when the feeling of the series has already been established. This unique approach lets the feel of the anime sink in to the viewer before they ever witness the opening sequence.
The soundtrack also brims with quality. Subtle background music adds to the ambiance and the opening and closing songs are exceptional. (Mean, come on, they have Paranoid Android in there ;) The opening song in particular goes well with the overall theme and feel of the series.
Ambient sounds all work together nicely and never distract from the animation. Also music plays a role on-screen as various characters interact with various musical instruments. All the sound corresponds very well to what is being presented on-screen (or in some cases, off-screen).
One interesting thing to note is how each episode correlates to other episodes. Rather than end each episode with a cliffhanger, Ergo Proxy’s episodes are self-contained. While there is an overall story being told, one is drawn to the next episode not by a cliffhanger but by pure intrigue at the overall story. This unique approach allows for some surprisingly brilliant episodes in the series that are disjointed from the rest. Without revealing any spoilers, some episodes start in a outrageously unique setting or in a place where all does not appear as it seems.
Ergo Proxy is a unique and compelling anime. The plot is robust and requires the viewer to think. The visuals are both artistic and realistic with a unique style. The sound and music enhance the overall experience. Ergo Proxy is definitely a top notch anime.
Plot: 10/10
The plot is excellent and unique. Ergo Proxy utilizes various story-telling methods to much success. The allusions to mythology definitely add a sense of wonder to the plot line.
Art/Animation:
If nothing else, the opening sequence is an amazing achievement of art and animation. The rest of the series is no different, making impressive use of contrast, colours, lighting, and more. Might be a little dark for some tastes, but Ergo Proxy sets it’s own unique style.
Characters:
Amazing depth to every character. Even supporting cast are important and memorable. The addition of the artificial life forms was a brilliant move.
Sound/Music:
The sound is well done and meshes well with the animation.
Opening and closing songs are top-notch and truly capture the feel of the animation. Score during the show is subtle but conveys feelings and emotion.
Overall Score:
Anything less than a 10 would be unjust toward this anime. However, I don’t believe this anime is for everyone. If you’re looking for an anime which packs a punch and is choking with action, you should probably look elsewhere. If you’re looking for in-depth characters, an intriguing plot, and some amazing artistry, then Ergo Proxy is for you.
