Chrono Crusade Review

Chrno Crusade seems almost like your typical anime, with a hot headed girl and a wimpy guy who just so happens to have super powers and kicks a lot of butt, but of course is under the control of the girl. However this anime distinguishes itself on story and character development, making it one of the better animes around.
Animation: Nice, i really liked how everyone looked. I was really into the clothing designs. You gotta wonder though about the nuns wearing stockings with high cuts on both sides of their skirts. What kind of nuns are they? My kind of nuns. Also, the action scenes were really good. The gun shooting, jumping around and buildings blowing up were really fluid and detailed enough to know that some effort was definitely put into those scenes. Also, something very notable is definitely the emotion. One of the things I look for is the ability for emotion to be expressed, which I figure must be tough to do when you’re drawing rather than acting. Not wanting to give too much away, in the end.. wow I believed it. I believed the emotion that was there, and i thought it was very appropriate. Good stuff.
Characters:
The better thing about this anime was character development. You really learn a lot of things about the characters, and what drives them to be doing… whatever it is they’re doing. While they may seem to be annoying, after a while you really get to like them. Great development.
Rosette: Last girl you’d expect to be a nun. Of course the last thing you’d expect would be a troop of gun-toting nuns going to fight demon spawns, so there’s not a whole lot of tradition left here. While she may seem potentially annoying, through character development you get to like her pretty quick. Same with Chrno.
Chrno: Sorta weak-willed and kinda reminds you of an 11 year old boy, but you quickly learn he’s not all that he seems to be. Not wanting to give off too much, again, good character development.
Others: There are alot of characters in here, but the above two are the main. The rest just revolves around those two, and strengthens their bond.
Story: Good story. At first it seems fairly typical, but as you learn more and more about the characters and the plot, it quickly distinguishes itself from the rest. Also, it doesn’t follow typical roads that you’re practically waiting for as it goes on, which is almost a let down, but it’s just one of the many things that makes this anime different and memorable.
Sounds/Music: I really like the opening song. Coupled with the animation, they both really fit, and it’s this sort of soothing song that kinda contradicts the rather fast pace and action-packed scenes, but it’s a nice lead into the anime. Plus the voice acting is great, especially for Rosette. Chrno’s voice gets a little annoying though. He’s like a teenager on the verge of puberty (voice kinda cracks while he’s speaking). Eh, it’s tolerable.
Not wanting to give too much away, the story is great, and the whole thing leaves you wanting more. I didn’t give it full stars though, because I felt that while everything was developed well, there’s a little more that could have been done to really flesh the whole thing out. ‘Course now it just makes me want to go find the manga to see if it all happened the same way! This anime is definitely worth checking out.
